When: Saturday, November 8th, 10am-12pm PST

Where: Online, Zoom

Difficulty: Beginner friendly, very basic sewing machine skills required (threading, sewing in a line) 

Requirements:  Working sewing machine at home (please test before class) and ability to log into Zoom. 

About: The first 30 minutes of class will cover how sewing machines work, common troubleshooting tips, and how to sew a basic seam. We will then go over how to choose the best hem type and sew practice hems. Have a garment ready for the last 30 minutes of class to hem yourself:)

Machine Skills We'll Cover:

  • Machine refresher
  • Troubleshooting tips
  • How to sew a basic seam
  • How to plan your garment hems
  • How to sew hems

Materials Required

  • Ability to use Zoom
  • Sewing machine (working and threaded according to manual)
  • Practice samples (instructions will be sent out week before class on how to create two small samples to use during class)
  • Need to have: Scissors, ruler, chalk (tailors chalk, blackboard chalk, or washable sewing pen), garment to hem (woven, not stretchy fabric is best) or extra practice fabric
  • Nice to have: Iron (or hair straightener!), pins/sewing clips/mini binder clips, note taking paper/pen, thread to match personal project for last 30min of class

Zoom Logistics:

1 Week before class: Instructions on how to make sewing samples and Zoom link will be sent out 

1 Day before class: Link and reminders sent out

9:55am: Zoom class opens

10:00-10:05am: Intros

10:05-11:15am: Instruction time with Q&A breaks

11:15-12pm: Personal project time

Zoom will be recorded and sent out after class for future sewing reference. Class capacity is 20 to allow for Q&A time

Instructor:

Emelia (she/her) has been running Summit Selvage since May 2022 as a sewing instructor, tailor, designer, and clothing mender. Before that, she worked as a workwear designer and has enjoyed teaching others to sew for close to 10 years.
